Who is a postgraduate student? Qualify for the SANSA Bursary

A postgraduate is a student who has completed a bachelor’s degree and is now pursuing further studies at a higher level.

Postgraduate studies typically involve more advanced coursework, research, and academic writing than undergraduate studies. You may be required to submit and defend a thesis or dissertation in order to complete the program. As a result, Postgraduate degrees can provide students with specialized knowledge and skills that can enhance their career prospects and earning potential.

SANSA Bursary: Postgraduate Science and Engineering Degrees

SANSA provides post-graduate degree bursaries to contribute to the national target for qualified post-graduates in Science and Engineering. The bursaries offered are listed below:

1. Earth Observation Degrees (Hons, MSc, PhD): Postgraduate Bursaries

  • Remote Sensing
  • Geospatial programming
  • Earth system science with remote sensing
  • Earth observations in ecosystems accounting
  • Applications of remote sensing in environmental management. Including oceans and marine, agriculture and rangelands, water resource management, mineral resources and spatial planning.

2. Engineering Degrees (MEng, MTech, MSc, PHD, DTech): Postgraduate Bursaries

  • Software  and Software Systems Engineering
  • Aeronautical, Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronic, Mechatronic And Computer Engineering
  • Space, Systems, Antenna and RF Engineering.

3. Space Science Degrees (Hons, MSc, MPhil, PhD): Postgraduate Bursaries

  • Solar physics and space weather forecasting.
  • Antarctic radar studies of atmosphere gravity waves.
  • Multi-instrument studies of space weather.
  • Modelling geomagnetically induced in power systems.
  • Multi-scale ionospheric physics, structure and dynamics.
  • Ionospheric and radio propagation modeling.
  • Theory of waves and solutions in plasmas.
  • Atmospheric radiation studies.
  • Verification of space weather forecasting.

4. All SANSA Postgraduate Bursaries: Divisions (Hons, MSc, PHD)

Candidate SANSA Postgraduate Bursaries: Application Requirements

  • Only applications within the mandated STEM fields will be considered.
  • If you obtained a minimum average of 65% for your last academic year or qualification will be considered, in conjunction with the previous point.
  • Click this link for SANSA projects. All proposal submissions in the related study areas will be submitted, for consideration, to their bursary committees.
  • SANSA welcomes any new projects that relate to their listed projects and encourages applicants to contact their researchers for advice and assistance with their proposals.
  • Masters and doctoral bursars MUST reapply every year for continued funding.

The main criteria used in the selection of successful applicants are:

  • Financial need,
  • Academic potential and
  • Career-oriented study programmes.

What the SANSA Bursary offers: Postgraduate Bursaries

How much is a SANSA bursary worth?

SANSA is currently revising the bursary values for 2024. SANSA funds the individual programmes as follows:

  • Honours – one-year R100 000 (excluding allowance to be determined on a case-to-case basis)
  • Masters – two years R120 000 (all inclusive)
  • PhD – three years R140 000 (all inclusive).

NB. Applicants may not hold a combination of bursaries that exceed these amounts. Should an applicant have another bursary of lessor amount, SANSA will consider providing a top-up amount to the student. This is provided that the student meets the External Bursary Policy criteria.

How to Apply for SANSA Postgraduate Bursaries:

You should upload all relevant documentation:

  • Full academic record
  • Fee statement for ALL study years
  • Proof of any undergraduate bursaries/funding
  • Only fully completed applications will be considered.
  • Documents that accompany the application form must be certified and uploaded.
  • SANSA or university testimonial forms must be completed by the supervisor and uploaded to the application form.

All Proposals for the SANSA Bursary must be submitted to: students@sansa.org.za by no later than 30 September 2023.
