Hey, Keep Climbing readers! Over the years, I’ve been involved in a few road accidents. Nothing too serious and no injuries to anyone involved, thank goodness! But as a teacher, I’ve met youth who were permanently disabled or seriously injured as a result of an accident. One of my saddest memories is of a grade 11 student who went missing. I remember him as being the last child and the only boy in his Durban family. The only child who was going to successfully make Matric, dreams were pinned on him. He was the victim of a fatal hit-and-run. Tragedies such as this tend to be too common in our society.
Now many of my readers fall into both high-risk accident age groups and also those planning to get their driver’s licenses. So I decided it’s time to address the Road Accident Fund and raise some road safety awareness. After all, this website is about living your best life, not being buried!

Road Accident Fund: Paying for Road Safety
Collins Letsoalo is the RAF chief executive officer. He says that the high rate of motor vehicle accidents is a significant area of concern and the largest cost driver for the RAF.
In 2021 alone, road crash fatalities resulted in an economic loss of R188 billion. This places a massive burden on the economy and the RAF.
Letsoalo said in his overview statement:
Road safety is, therefore, a top priority, and the RAF will implement several road safety initiatives. These initiatives include expanding the Driver Wellness Programme and focusing on road safety education, particularly among youth. In a country with high levels of poverty and unemployment, motor vehicle accidents worsen existing socioeconomic challenges. The payment of compensation to victims of motor vehicle accidents for death and injury benefits is critical in improving the socioeconomic conditions of the country.
In South Africa, road traffic injuries ranked second to interpersonal violence but the road traffic fatality rate (39.7 per 100 000) was higher than for any WHO region and almost double the global average.WHO 2000 cited in Rosana Norman et al.
In conclusion, the devastating toll of road accidents on South Africa’s youth demands a targeted and comprehensive approach. A youth strategy by the RAF is not only justified but essential to saving lives, preventing accidents, and creating a safer road environment for the younger generation.
